Residential Green Building Committee

The purpose of the LEED for Homes and Residential Green Building Advocacy Committee is to build collaborative relationships between and among the USGBC Heart of Florida Chapter, local LEED for Homes Providers and Agents, the Builder's Association of North Central Florid (BANCF), and other regionally or locally applicable green homebuilding programs including (but not limited to) the Florida Green Building Coalition, the NAHB Green Building Program and Building America.   The USGBC Heart of Florida Residential Green Building Advocacy Committee seeks to bring all pertinent residential building players to the table, including government officials and low income housing advocates, to help clearly define the costs, benefits, and rigor of the myriad green building programs and options available.

Simply put, our goal is to increase interest in sustainable home design and construction as well as to provide objective and accurate information to all interested parties, and to encourage local government and housing agencies to provide green building incentives and products.

Recently this committee has been meeting monthly to tour a home under construction that is planned to achieve Platinum LEED certification.   Attendees have included interested builders, architects and interior designers, suppliers, as well as interested members of the general public.  Discussions have been dynamic and we have many repeat attendees.  If you are interested in the next tour (held monthly on Saturdays at 10AM) check the events calendar.  Everyone is welcome.

Occasionally we meet and bring in a speaker on a particular topic for discussion.  Topics covered in 2009 have included the "The Durability Planning and Management Process" and "Location and Linkages: Why Where Your Home is Located is Important to Sustainability" (a discussion about new urbanism).  Future discussions are planned to address water conservation in the home with the St John's River Water Management District.  Our discussion topics are applicable to all residential construction and do not advocate any specific product or method.

If you are interested in being a committee member, have an idea for a discussion or presentation or are interested in getting involved in another way, please contact me at leedhomes@usgbcheartfl.org.  Your input, collaboration and help are welcomed.
